Hubert Green, of Birmingham, Alabama, has the distinction of being the first professional golfer ever inducted into the Southern Golf Association Hall of Fame. Green graduated from Florida State University in 1968 and turned professional a year later in 1969. Before that he was a two-time Southern Amateur Champion winning first in 1966 at the Country Club of Birmingham at the age of 19, and again in 1969 at Belle Meade Country Club in Nashville, Tennessee. During Green’s professional career he has won over 20 events combined on the PGA and Champions Tour, including 2 major championships. Green is a U.S. Open champion as well as a PGA champion winning the U.S. Open in 1977 at Southern Hills Country Club and the 1985 PGA Championship at Cherry Hills Country Club. Among Green’s notable accomplishments, he was a member on three Ryder Cup teams in 1977, 1979, and 1985, helping the United States to victories in 1977 and 1979. Green continues to be competitive on the Champions Tour, but has also become active in golf course design. Green’s designs include TPC at Southwind in Memphis, Tennessee and Greystone Country Club in his hometown of Birmingham, Alabama. In 2007 the World Golf Hall of Fame chose to honor Hubert Green with an induction in the Veteran’s category. |
