KNOX-JOHNSON WIN SOUTHERN INTERNATIONAL FOUR-BALL
Ex-Tar Heels Boles-West Win Senior Division
Larry Guest, Orlando, Fla

Chattanooga investments executive Steve Johnson atoned for leaving partner Jeff Knox flying solo on the 72nd hole by sealing victory on the second playoff hole in the SGA's 70th Southern International Four-Ball in January. Johnson hit a clutch, 159-yard 5-iron into a stiff breeze to within seven feet to nudge Indianans Randy Nichols and Skip Runnels, who bogied the second extra hole at Emerald Dunes Golf Club near West Palm Beach, Florida.

Johnson and Knox won the featured mid-am division (age 25-54) of the tournament.

Both teams completed the 72 holes of regulation with matching 22-under-par, best-ball 266 totals after a stirring final-round battle. A shot apart at the start of the day, the two teams, paired together as the final group, found themselves tied into the closing two holes after Knox and Johnson bogied the par-3 16th. Nichols very narrowly missed long birdie putts on 17 and 18, either of which would have finally given his team a victory in the tournament after three other runnerup finishes.

On the 436-yard closing hole, Johnson hooked his ball out of bounds, leaving partner Knox to make a clutch par that forced the playoff. Said Johnson: "I was sure glad I was able to come through in playoff after what I did on 18."

Jamie Crow of Tampa and Duke Delcher of Bluffton, S.C., missed the playoff by a stroke to finish alone in third.

In the senior division (55 and up), 54-hole leaders William Boles and Marty West took all the drama out of the last day as they completed an impressive 8-stroke triumph. "We were glad not to have a lot of drama," said Boles, a Wilson, NC dentist, whose team birdied three of their first three holes Friday to slam the door on their distance pursuers. The former UNC Tar Heel golf teammates cruised in with 5-under-par 67 for a 28-under-par total of 260.

The Indiana team of Bob Daugherty and Jerry Nelson, and Bob Morris-Vic Gerard tied for second with 268 totals.

This was the first year the venerable tournament was run under the auspices of the Southern Golf Association.

Attempting to shake their bridesmaid label, Nichols and Runnels had jumped to a 3-stroke advantage in the opening round with a 9-under-par 63 and were four shots ahead of the eventual champs. Despite a second-round 69, the pair clung to the lead by 2 over Johnson-Knox. But the latter pair eased in front through 54 holes with an 8-under 64 for a 198 today, one ahead of Nichols-Runnels into the dramatic final lap.
