SOUTHERN
INTERNATIONAL FOUR-BALL CHAMPIONSHIP |
| The Board of Directors of the Southern Golf Association accepted responsibility for conducting the International Four-Ball Championship in 2003 and began doing so in 2004, under the title Southern International Four-Ball Championship. This idea was first presented to the Board by John McKey, Jr., past President of the SGA and long-time Board member, who had singularly conducted this venerable championship for 25 years. It was Mr. McKey’s desire to turn the reins over to the Southern to ensure the future of this 70 year old, nationally prominent championship. The list of previous winners reads like a who’s-who of championship golf and the SGA is currently working on a complete list of those champions. The Championship is comprised of two divisions, Mid-Amateur and Senior, and is 54 holes of Four-Ball Stroke Play. The 2006 Champions were the Mid-Amateur team of Robert Gerwin and Gene Elliot, and the Senior division champions was the team of Steve Earsley and Mike Rice. In 2007, the Championship was played over 54 holes at The Fox Club in Palm City Florida, results are below. The 2008 Internatinoal Four-Ball Championship will be held again at The Fox Club in Palm City, Florida over the period of January 11-13. |

Kuehne-Green Go Wire-to-Wire To Win Southern Int’l Four-Ball PALM CITY, FL – Former Walker Cuppers Trip Kuehne and Danny Green went wire-to-wire to win the title in the 73rd Southern International Four-Ball by three strokes Sunday at The Fox Club. Fighting off a pair of challenges by runners-up Duke Delcher and Chris Stutts, the winners pulled away to as many as a five-shot margin coming down the stretch. Kuehne-Green posted a final-round 67 to finish at 21-under par 195. Kuehne birdied the eighth and ninth hole – the latter on a 52-foot putt – to open a 4-shot margin at the turn. After Stutts birdied the tenth and Delcher added another at the eleventh to pull within two, Kuehne, a Dallas investments exec, turned the matter into a foregone conclusion on the downwind, 540-yard, par-5 12th. He reached the green with a driver, 7-iron, and canned the 10-foot eagle putt. Green, from Jackson, TN, birdied the next hole to stretch the champs’ lead to five to assure the pair’s first victory in the venerable tournament’s featured Mid-Am division after two near-misses in recent years. In the Senior Division, John Dennis of Greenville SC and Norman Swenson of Linville NC wiped out the 2-shot overnight lead of Georgians Mike Sprouts and Ron Waeghe to force an extended playoff.
