Southern International Four-Ball Championship

The Board of Directors of the Southern Golf Association accepted responsibility for conducting the International Four-Ball Championship in 2003 and began doing so in 2004, under the title Southern International Four-Ball Championship.

This idea was first presented to the Board by John McKey, Jr., past President of the SGA and long-time Board member, who had singularly conducted this venerable championship for 25 years. It was Mr. McKey’s desire to turn the reins over to the Southern to ensure the future of this 70 year old, nationally prominent championship. The list of previous winners reads like a who’s-who of championship golf and the SGA is currently working on a complete list of those champions.

The Championship is comprised of two divisions, Mid-Amateur and Senior, and is 54 holes of Four-Ball Stroke Play. The 2007 Champions were the Mid-Amateur team of Danny Green and Tripp Kuehne, and the Senior division champions was the team of John Dennis and Norman Swenson. In 2008, the Championship was played over 54 holes at The Fox Club in Palm City Florida, results are below.

In Southern International Four-Ball

PALM CITY, FL. – A pair of former Mississippi State golf teammates passed defending champs Trip Kuehne and Danny Green in the closing holes Sunday to win the 74^th Southern International Four-Ball at The Fox Club. Down by two at the start of the day, Tyler Crawford and Clay Homan pulled even with the defending champs with three holes to play, then took the lead on Crawford’s birdie on the 17^th and closed out a two-shot win with a par from Homan, the only player in the foursome to dodge the lake on the dogleg finishing hole.

Homan, now the golf coach at State, played his second shot safe right of the green after his partner and both Kuehne and Greene found the water. He wedged to the fringe some 20 feet from the hole and got down in two for the clinching par 5 and his team’s winning total of 22-under-par 196 in the featured Mid-Am division.

“They played great and deserved to win,” said Kuehne, of Irving, Tex, who won the U.S. Mid-Am title in October. “When you putt like I did down the stretch, you don’t deserve to win.” He missed birdie putts inside 10 feet on two of the four closing holes.

In the Senior division, tour pro agent Bob Morris and partner Mike Kelly came from three off the pace with a final 64 to win by a shot over John Benson and Don Erickson. Former U.S. Amateur champ Vinny Giles and partner Jim Holtgrieve failed to fire in the final round and finished four back.
