Danny Lee Unanimous Pick For SGA
National Am of the Month
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – New Zealand’s
Danny Lee, 18, was the unanimous
selection for the Southern Golf
Association’s National Amateur of
the Month for August after capping a
stunningly dominant month by
becoming the youngest U.S. Amateur
champ in history.
In the weeks prior to
storming through the U.S. Amateur,
Lee won the Western Amateur and was
the only amateur to make the cut in
the PGA Tour Wyndham Championship at
Greensboro, NC. After two rounds of
medal play in the Amateur on the
famed No. 2 Course at Pinehurst, NC,
Lee rolled through the match play
portion of the prestigious event,
finally holing a 30-foot putt to
seal a 5-and-4 victory over Florida
State’s Drew Kittleson in the
36-hole final.
At the Western, Lee was
medalist as well as champion of the
match play prelim rounds. Several
top-ranked amateurs enjoyed sponsor
invitations to play in the Wyndham,
but Lee was the only one to make the
cut. He didn’t stop there, rising to
a 20th place finish as a
preview of his targeted pro career.
The 5-year-old SGA award is
determined each month by a
blue-ribbon national selection panel
of golf officials, coaches and
journalists. Lee’s selection was
only the second unanimous choice of
the panel. Previous winners this
year have included
Oklahoma
State’s Trent Leon, Alabama’s
Michael Thompson, UCLA’s Kevin
Chappell, USC’s Rory Hie and
Southern Am champ Kyle Stanley.
The 106-year-old Southern
Golf Association promotes amateur
golf in a variety of ways, including
the staging of the prestigious
Southern Amateur Championship, the
103rd edition scheduled
next July at Colonial CC in
Memphis.
