SOUTHERN AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP
1960

The fabulous course of the Dunes Golf and Beach Club located at Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, was the scene of the 54th Amateur Championship and the Senior Championships of the Southern Golf Association from June 6th through June 12, 1960.

This event which attracted an unusually large number of outstanding amateurs from thorough-out the South and Southeast was acclaimed by many to be the most colorful and successful tournament in the history of the Association.

A field of 237 golfers opened play in the 36 hole qualifying rounds for the Amateur Championship with only 64 destined to make the championship division. Walker Cup player, Billy Joe Patton of Morganton, N. C., won medalist honors and the coveted Sam Perry Medal putting together a first round one over par 73 and a brilliant five under par 67 second round to qualify at 140, the only sub-par 36 hole score recorded in the qualifying rounds.

Charles B. Smith of Gastonia, N.C., emerged as the 1960 Southern Amateur Champion having defeated Cobby Ware of Augusta, Georgia, an outstanding member of the University of Georgia Golf Team by a score of 4-2 in the 36 holes finals. Charles Smith, recent winner of the North-South Tournament, displayed a remarkable game combined with a positive determination to annex the Southern crown, to overcome the outstanding play of Cobby Ware.

Second flight honors were taken by Reid Tull, Jr., an up and coming young golfer of Salisbury, N.C., via a 4-3 victory over J.B. "Sonny" Ellis of Atlanta, Ga., in the 18 hole finals.

In the 54 hole Medal Play Southern Seniors Championship, open to golfers 55 years of age and older, Frank C. Ford of Charleston, S.C., posted a 79-74-80-233, two strokes better than W. E. Norvell, Jr., to win both the Southern Senior Championship as well as the trophy for the 55-59 age bracket. Dewey P. Bowen of Atlanta, Ga., posted a 247 to take the honors in the 60-64 age group while L. M. Graves of the Dunes Club finished with a 273 to become the winner of the over 65 age bracket.

In the recently formed Junior-Senior Championship open to golfers in the 50-54 age bracket, William Terrill of Charlotte, N.C., combined rounds of 73-74.-72 over the tough 72 par layout for a total of 219 to be the first winner of this event. Wiley 0. Fleenor of Winston-Salem, N.C., was runner-up with 232.

North Carolina won the Bob Jones Trophy for four-ball team Championship with a 36 hole qualifying total of 588. Billy Joe Patton was low with 140 followed by E. A. Justa 147, Dale Morey 149 and Bill Harvey 152.

The ocean side layout of the Dunes Golf and Beach Club was unanimously acclaimed to be in superb condition and presented a real challenge to championship play. The unexcelled cooperation and gracious hospitality extended to all contestants and members of the Southern Golf Association by the Dunes Club and the host club committee headed by Mr. G. W. "Buster" Bryant and composed of Mr. R. H. Govan, Cmdr. F. A. Read, Jr., Mrs. Jean Winstead, Mr. L. N. Clark, Mr. A. P. Gandy, Jr., and the club pro, Mr., Jimmy D'angelo, will long be remembered by everyone.
